Horsekeeping on a Small Acreage: Facilities Design and Management by Storey Publishing, LLC A very useful book that hits it's mark
If you are setting up a ranch for the first time on 2 acres or more, this is the book for you. Very informative with diagrams and in depth explanations that will assist you in setting up your acreage the right way, even if you have never done anything like this before!
Horsekeeping on a Small Acreage: Facilities Design and Management by Storey Publishing, LLC Good basic info
A good background on setting up a horse property. Not everyone has the acreage they use in the book but you can glean a lot from it.
Horsekeeping on a Small Acreage: Facilities Design and Management by Storey Publishing, LLC Great info on horses but the title is misleading
This book was packed with great information on horse facilities but it was not the information I needed. I was looking for a book on managing a truly small horse property (mine is 4/5s of an acre) so I have to agree with those who comment that the "small acreages" in this book are not small at all, especially not to someone in Califonia. An acre here is considered "horse property" since most Californians owning much more land than that are probably millionaires (unless in the desert.) True, there was a plan or two that could work on an acre but the info I truly needed, info unique to such a small area, was not in this book. We Californians need advice on how to manage manure in a small area with neighbors on all sides and what about the turnout area, which obviously is not going to support the growth of any grasses. The barns and buildings in the book are way too large and extravagent for the average small horse property here. There are many problems unique to truly small horse properties but this book doesn't really address them.
Horsekeeping on a Small Acreage: Facilities Design and Management by Storey Publishing, LLC This is the book for a newby
This book goes over basically every detail that I can think of that would help to begin a horse farm or just having one horse. It covers everything from buying land, thinking about the neighbors to drainage and barns. Cherry covers it all in detail and it is very well explained. If you get one book on this topic this should be it!
Horsekeeping on a Small Acreage: Facilities Design and Management by Storey Publishing, LLC If you only buy one barn book, buy this one!
Even if you already have a barn orr board your horses somewhere, this is a great book to read. There is information about how horse behaviour affects taking care of them, and tons of information about stable management. There are many helpful charts comparing types of stall floorings, etc. In response to a previous reviewer's comment that there are not any plans for an acre of half acre of land, that is incorrect. There is a sample layout, where the pastures are, where the house is, where the barn is, for a a 1/2 acre piece of land, and one for a 1-acre pice of land on pages 72 and 73. There is tons of information on land, fencing, equipment, care, etc.
